Parenting – an Analysis

Parenting is a huge responsibility which is not to be taken lightly. Biological or not, a parent is responsible for raising his/her child/children properly. There are specific types of parenting styles which have been observed among people in general.

Types of parenting

Authoritarian parenting

Such parents think they are military leaders and that their wards are commandos who have to execute orders and live a disciplinary lifestyle with little or no chance to express free thought. Children raised in such families do not get much freedom and it is indeed too strict an environment which cuts the wings of a child.

Free

Parents are too lenient and allow too much freedom. The children are not taken account to and they grow up wildly, often causing disruption in house or society. Total lack of control and discipline makes the children behave like nomads. This is also not good for the child.

The proper parent

The proper parent is one who gives freedom to the child and also has control over the child in a right manner. The parent makes sure that the child is afraid to break rules of the family. Yet, chance is given to the child to express opinion and to follow dreams.

I agree that parents have to balance their authority with giving children space to make choices and exercise their autonomy. But I strongly disagree when you say that a “perfect” parent will make sure children are afraid to break rules. That is authoritarian and, to be frank, it simply doesn’t work. Fear and the use of intimidation or physical force only teach children to avoid punishment, not to make good decisions in life.

I am a mother of two and I can say that being a parent is not that easy, as our kid’s parent we must know where and when we should give and take their freedom 🙂

I believe that with parenting we have to take everything in consideration. Not all children are the same, some learn faster and others like to test the limits. The best way is to practice balance and understanding.
