The Health Benefits of Lemons and Limes

Lemons and limes have a long history of use.  These tropical fruits originated in South East Asia and made their presence known to other parts of the world, especially India and the Middle East, through trade.  They are now grown in many countries.  Since lemons and limes are grown in tropical regions, the trees produce them all year.  Many grocery stores carry this produce all year round.   There are many uses for lemon and limes.  While they are used in many culinary dishes, they are also used in lotions, perfumes, cleaning products, candles and aromatherapy oils.  Lemons and limes are packed with vitamins and nutrients.  It should be no surprise that they would be a healthy addition to the refrigerator.

Lemons and limes boost the immune system because they are a major source of Vitamin C and flavonoids.  If you have a cold or the flu, fight the symptoms by having some lemon or lime juice. You can even prevent yourself from getting sick by adding a tablespoon of juice to a glass of warm water.  Drinking this juice twice a day not only speeds up your recovery, it is a low calorie drink that contains no cholesterol, fat or sodium.  This is an excellent drink to have if you are trying to lose weight since both lemon and limes play a role in removing fat deposits in the body and preventing water retention.

The Vitamin C in lemons and limes, along with the citric acid are both powerful antioxidants which  we need to protect our bodies against free radicals.   “Free radicals is a term often used to describe damaged cells that can be problematic. They are “free” because they are missing a critical molecule, which sends them on a rampage to pair with another molecule” (WebMD). The damaged cells will attack the good ones and damage them as well. Lemons and Limes play a key role of destroying the bad cells before they cause any further damage.

Lemons and limes good for your heart since it is a natural blood thinner. When you have high levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDP)-or bad cholesterol-in your bloodstream, your arteries get clogged up with fatty buildup. This causes high blood pressure, because your heart has to work faster to move the blood through the arteries. This in turn can lead to a heart attack or stroke. The Vitamin C in lemons and limes play an important role in reducing the levels of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL)-the bad cholesterol and lowering blood pressure.

The American Heart Association states that food that contains high fiber content plays a key role in reducing blood pressure.  Lemons and limes are an excellent source of fiber.  Not only that, they are also high in potassium and magnesium. Lemons and limes also contain folate.  This plays a key role in making the cells in the body function properly.  When you do not have enough folate in your daily diet, the levels on homocysteine in your blood can increase.  Higher levels of homocysteine are one of the main causes of damage to the blood vessels and blood clots.  By including lemons and limes in your daily diet, you may decrease the chance of getting a heart attack by at least thirty present.

Lemons and Limes are both excellent sources of calcium. Some individuals do not get enough dairy into their diet. Some people just do not like drinking that glass of milk. Others are lactose intolerant and cannot have any dairy products. By drinking a cup of rooibos tea each day, you are helping your body by increasing bone density.  The calcium found in lemons and limes also play a major role in lowering cholesterol.

Lemons and limes help stimulate the production of the red blood cells in the body. An anemic person benefits from drinking lemon and lime juice because they both are a good source of iron. Not only do these two fruits increase the number of red blood cells and make them stronger, it improves the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the entire circulation system.

            Lemons and limes contain astringent properties. Applying the juice from either of these to your skin will help clear up many skin conditions such as:

The skin plays a role in removing toxins from the body. One of the reasons why people have acne is because of the toxins that are expelled through the skin. Drinking lemon or lime juice, or adding juice to a tub of hot water and bathing in it, is an effective way of clearing up acne and boils and making your skin look beautiful.  While the vitamin C helps heal the skin from acne outbreaks and clear up the bruises left from these outbreaks, the vitamin E and A helps the skin to remain smooth and moist and make your skin younger.

Lemons and limes are an excellent source of copper.  One of the reasons why some people get gray hair early in their lives is because they do not have enough copper in their diets.

When we eat food, the saliva our mouths excrete play a major role in breaking down food and aiding digestion.  Since lemons and limes are sour, our mouths produce more saliva.  Lemons and limes both stimulate peristalsis, which is “the contraction of smooth muscle tissue to propel food/chime through a digestive tract” (Wikipedia).  Therefore, including lemons and limes in our daily diets is an excellent way to prevent constipation.

Lemons and limes contain diuretic properties. It is very effective in treating and preventing urinary tract infections, kidney infections and stones.   Lemons and limes contain liminoids. These help remove toxins from the body by making them more water soluble where the kidneys flush them out with urine.  These liminoids also promote healthy eyes, skin, teeth and bones.
