The Health Benefits of Milk Thistle and Kombucha Teas

Milk Thistle Tea

Milk thistle is a flowering herb that is related to the ragweed and daisy family.  Native to the Mediterranean countries this herb can be found growing wildly in the west and east coasts.  This herb gets its name from the milky white substance that comes from crushed leaves.  This is an excellent plant to keep around if you want to protect your liver.  The seeds contain silymarin which is an active ingredient that helps make the liver stronger, reduces inflammation and swelling and helps remove toxins from this organ.  Some other benefits of this herb include lowering bad cholesterol, controlling your blood sugar levels and regulating the digestive system so you are more regular.

With all these benefits, you might want to consider drinking milk thistle tea on a regular basis.  You can purchase bagged tea at your local Wegmans or health food store.  However, it would be more beneficial to make your own tea from the seas,  All you would need are some seeds.  While you can easily find milk thistle if you live on the east or west coasts, it is better to purchase some from a reputable health food store or from online sites such as EBay or Amazon.  If you try to collect the seeds from the wild, it might be a bit time consuming.  There is also the risk of harvesting poisonous plants which can be confused for this herb.

Measure out one to two teaspoons into the tea ball.  Put the ball into an eight ounce cup.  Pour boiling water over the ball.  Cover the cup to prevent steam from escaping.  Allow the tea to brew for fifteen to twenty minutes before drinking.

For extra healing properties and health benefits, and for flavor, add some honey and lemon juice.

Note if you are allergic to ragweed, do not use milk thistle since it might cause a reaction.  Talk to your doctor about alternative tea for overall liver health.
