Matthew 5:14 ” Your are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
This morning, I was in the church, Western Bicutan Adventist Church. It is my first time in this church. When I arrived, the lesson study was already begun and an old sister in Christ was the one in the pulpit explaining the week lesson.
She was citing the Ezekiel 47:1-8. In this verses, God is showing Ezekiel about the water that flows outside the church and every way the water pass, a life begin. The meaning of this, is salvation.
As a Christian, we are called for a mission. We should not only a hearer of the word but a doer. For God, being in the church and giving offering is not enough. We must let the water flow to others so that they will live also. Living spiritually not physically.
Some people, maybe we see them living happily but we may not know that they are dying because of some depression and they are keeping away from the source of hope and life. We must stretch our hand and heart to them. Let the light that we receive flows on them.
Another thing that was being discuss was GIVING. Others reasoned that its not good to give to people who are idle and begging in the street. Let me ask you, when Jesus died on the cross, did he think who will accept Him as their Savior? No. He gave His life to all. When it comes to helping others, we must not question the poor and the beggar. When it comes to opportunity, we are blessed and lucky. They have no opportunity like us. What is 5 pesos or ten pesos we can share out of our thousands. We knew that we will have money every time we get our salary. I know you can cite many reasons not to give but, helping is not only in terms of money.
A sister pointed my reasoning and saying, my reason is not applicable on her experience. A drunkard man always pass by in her house and always beg her for five pesos. Can she always give him? After she gave money, she saw her buying cigarettes or beer. Well, that person doesn’t need money. He needs her advise. Advise him how to become a better person. Advise him what smoking can give him. Teach him how to manage life without this vice. If he follow or not, its not our responsibility anymore. As what Jesus said, if anyone didn’t let you in in their house, move on and leave. Jesus never taught the disciples to insult them or to be hurt if people didn’t listen to their preaching. If we are going to help the poor, let us not question their poverty or the lacking of opportunity. Let us give for Jesus said, the giver is blessed.
Another thing, that we must know about giving is related to who we are in Christ. Let us read Matthew 25:34-46 Then the King will say to those on His right Hand, ” Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you give Me drinks; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me, I was in prison and you came to Me.” Then we will answer, saying, “When did we do that my Lord? Jesus will answer, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, YOU DID IT TO ME.”
When was the last time, you give food or money to the beggar who cleans your shoes inside the jeepney? When was the time, you give some clothes to those victims of fire? Have you remember, your neighbor who come to your door and ask for a kilo of rice? When was the last time, you gave but insulted the beggar of begging always? Think that we are on a mission on Earth. Whatever we have is a blessing from God. We must share what we have. Jesus loves the poor and even God instruct us to have mercy and justice to the poor.
We are the light of the world. If we give, our light shines and God is glorified. When we do good to others, we do it for Jesus not for our salvation. Jesus is in us when we accept Him as our Savior. We, as a light must shine everytime. Don’t say that there is time for giving. Let giving be a part of our life.
