Debit Card and Credit Card Woes: Will things get better?

The entire world has been talked into (or forced into) using plastic cards, such as debit and credit cards, for just about everything. Either a credit card or a debit card is needed for almost everything in life now. Is this a better idea than using cash or checks?

Using debit cards and credit cards can make some transactions seem easier:

However, the woes of using these accounts seem to be getting out of hand for some. Have you had some negative experiences with such accounts? The answer is probably yes.

Recently we learned that a service provider accidentally charged our credit card several times for a month’s service. This happens all of the time according to the credit card company we spoke with. Many are not aware of what is happening if they do not watch their accounts closely.

What you should do to help prevent issues with debit and credit cards:

  • Keep all receipts and confirmation numbers for purchases and orders.
Contact your account service center as soon as something seems suspicious
Do not sign up for any automatic payments if you do not check your accounts!
Check your accounts on a regular basis if you do have automatic payments of any sort.
Do not use your debit or credit card for trial services or free offers no matter how good the deal seems.

Many people respond to offers that are supposed to be free if the shipping and handling is paid for with a card of any kind. However, once you give that information to someone over the phone, you have no idea who else will see your account details. Recently we helped someone get charges removed from her card after someone continued to send more products she did not agree to. A checking account can quickly be emptied by an unscrupulous business that continues to send merchandise you do not want.

Readers might be surprised to learn what else can and does happen:

Once the person we assisted seemed to clear things up with our help and the help of her bank, she learned another company had been given her information. According to her bank, this often happens. Now the bank is changing her account number and issuing a new card so the companies using her information will be hitting a dead account.

Some may recall we were told things would be so much better once computers were used for everything and cards were used to help us keep track of our money. Now many of us have learned this is not always the case. We have spent many hours each week on the phone with various ones because something is not right with one account or another. Many others have shared with us that they have had issues with their debit and credit cards as well.

Some places will not take cash:

As cash can no longer be used every place you frequent, not having a debit or credit card is impossible these days. Several years ago while renting a car we were surprised to hear no cash was taken at the location we used. It was explained that this was for safety reasons. However, our insurance agent claimed this is because having your credit card on file will allow them to charge for any suspected or actual damages that could occur.

I know a credit card earns points or rewards for every purchases made. I have a debit card instead which I think it is not eligible to earn a reward from purchases I made unlike the credit card. It was my plan before to get a credit card for easy purchases. Users’ testimonies said that they couldn’t get away from exorbitant interest rates charged by the bank for their credit cards. In that I obliged to have a debit card. My only problem with debit card if my available balance is below the required maintenance balance by the bank. Then I have to be penalized by service charge.

Yes, the fees some pay in interest is not worth it. Saving money and paying cash is always nice if we can do it.

They do the same with many hotels now a days as well. That way if any damages are done, they can charge the credit card. I understand why they have chosen to do it this way. It only takes a few bad seeds to make harder on the rest of us.

You are right. Nowadays, many have already been victimized for their electronic cards have been cloned and their money in the bank has been drained without their knowledge.

I use a debit card for most of my daily purchases-I just have to watch out and make sure I do not spend more than what is in my bank or I would get charged an overdraft. I have a Kohl’s charge card which offers rewards and savings. I only have a $300 limit on it and usually only spend $100 at a time and pay it off at the end of the month.

We can ask the bank to lower or cut our credit limit too in order to avoid we over spend and out of our budget.

    1. Gil Camporazo

Does it possible? Or it would be better if we track our expenses so as not to overspend the credit line.

I think there are pros and cons on using credit and debit card nowadays, however the root of debts still all about the spending habit of someone.

Yes, but those stealing from people with credit cards or debit cards and any company that takes advantage by rebilling is certainly to blame for that behavior. Too often now, personal information is gained by someone without the authority to bill the accounts.

We used our credit card only to purchase stuff with zero interest on an installment basis. And, our bank has a separate credit card for online purchases which I think is secured because every time you used you will be asked for the security number.

Some things we think are secure turn out to be hacked. No clue how all of this happens, but it can become a mess.

I haven’t heard of a person who stole a credit card had been punished. No reported cases yet. Have you known one or two?

Fortunately, the debit and pre-paid cards now exist, these are based on the money we have. Credit cards to me are a bad habit to get into. These cause us to get into more debt and could lead to trouble down the road. May seem convenient at the time but these cause a whole lot of problems later.

    1. Gil Camporazo

You are absolutely right. I have read in some posts or blogs that sad plight of those credit card holders. It is easy for them to bet what they want on credit but the rate is exorbitant especially when they are unable to pay it on time.
