My handy phone vibrated. I picked it up and checked what’s the text message I received all about. I had just finished my cup of hot oatmeal for my breakfast. I told my wife I had to go to school before 10 in the morning. She did’t give me a word for she was busy at the kitchen preparing for the breakfast of our three grandchildren for they’d to go to school too.
It was already 9:30. I had to hurry for the transportation going to my school was scarce. Motorized tricycle was the common transportation the commutter could avail of. I took 5 minute shower and then wore my school uniform. I checked my phone’s time. It was already 10. Well, I had no choice but to take the service tryke of my son-in-law. He drove for me.
I was surprised two of my female teachers approached me and escorted me to the school stage. There I saw a medium size tarpaulin with a bold letters inscription, “Happy 65th Birthday, Sir Gil” with a big picture at the left side. One teacher led me up to the stage to sit on single upholstered chair. I was the star at that moment.
Then a short program followed with 13 of my teachers singing a special song for me, parents giving birthday presents, and the pupils from kinder class up to the grade six level handed their handmade birthday cards. As they gave me the card, they gave me a hug and kisses. I couldn’t measure how happy I was at the time. Finally I sliced the big birthday cake through the courtesy of my teachers.
The birthday and the farewell party was over. I went home full of gladness and being grateful to the thoughtfulness of everyone in the school.
At home nothing was prepared for I hadn’t given anything to my wife for our birthday celebration. I was running out of money for I had just retired and the last time that I received my salary was September. It would take so long to receive my monthly pension. The only thing we received was a gift from our youngest daughter.
As a routine I took my handy friend and then started pounding it for the updates of my blog and online writing job. Thirty minutes later, our daughter-in-law grabbed the hands of my wife and my daughter grabbed mine. They led us to the humble house of our eldest daughter. It was closed the suddenly it burst opened. We saw a cake on their table with 65 candle number on it. Around it were foods, drinks, and our favorite delicacies. Balloons and decorations all over the place.
I thought the party was over. Anyway as a matter of ceremony, my wife and I blew the candles and everybody sang the Happy Birthday song. Everybody was happy for the surprised birthday party tendered to us by our children and grandchildren. And finally the party was over. My wife and I were 65.
Below is a video created by our daughter-in-law for our birthday greetings:
