The Health Benefits of Grapefruit, Grapefruit Juice and Grapefruit Seed Extract

Related to the orange family, the grapefruit comes in the white, pink and red varieties. Containing a juicy, sour segmented flesh, this fruit is known as the juice of paradise because of its many health benefits. Omega 3s and 6s, along with fiber, potassium, lycopene and Vitamin C, all play a role in lowering blood pressure. When you have too much low density lipoprotein (LDL)-also known as the bad cholesterol, the walls of your arteries get built up with fatty plaque. This will cause high blood pressure. This fatty plaque also restricts the blood flow through the arteries and can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Grapefruit contains folate.  This plays a key role in making the cells in the body function properly.  When you do not have enough folate in your daily diet, the levels on homocysteine in your blood can increase.  Higher levels of homocysteine are one of the main causes of damage to the blood vessels and blood clots.  Including grapefruit in your daily diet, you may decrease the chance of getting a heart attack by at least thirty percent.

We need anti-oxidants to protect our bodies against free radicals or damaged cells. These damaged cells will attack the good ones and damage them as well. Grapefruit plays a key role in destroying the bad cells before they cause any further damage. Vitamin C, lycopene and Omega 36 found in grapefruit acts as a very powerful and effective anti-oxidant.

While there are false claims about the “Grapefruit Diet” claiming that you can lose tons of weight, it is true that you can lose pounds by eating sensible and drinking a glass of grapefruit juice with your meals. Containing no cholesterol or fats, this juice helps break down processed meat, sugar and flour faster than when you do not drink this juice, thus making it easier for your body to digest food. This fruit also helps suppress the appetite. This is helpful if you are trying to limit your calories and want to fight those unwanted cravings.

Loaded with anti-oxidants, grapefruit juice surpasses apple, cranberry and Concord grape juice. Drinking a glass helps boost the immune system and is excellent in fighting the symptoms of colds and the flu. The next time that flu bug gets you, drink a glass of grapefruit juice rather than the usual glass of orange juice.

While drinking grapefruit juice is a delicious addition to your diet, you can apply it to your face to clear up your complexion. It is high in salicylic acids. Grapefruit seed extract comes from the seeds, pulp and white membranes of grapefruit and is made into a liquid,   It was found in the 1700s that not only the fruit of grapefruit was edible, but the seeds, pulp and membrane can be used for one purpose or another. In aromatherapy, people use the grapefruit peel to make essential oils. The seeds can be use as feed for cattle. Because of its many health benefits, grapefruit seed extract is becoming more popular each day.

Uses for Grapefruit Seed Extract

When it comes to home remedies, grapefruit seed extract is not a common product to treat common ailments and conditions.  However, this is a beneficial product to keep in your house for a variety of reasons.  The anti-bacterial properties and citric acid of GSE is effective in treating yeast infections, athlete’s foot, toe nail fungus, gum disease, sore throats, ear aches, ulcers, diarrhea, dandruff, impetigo, acne, psorrias, eczema and scapes, cuts and burns.

Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent facial cleanser. Put three drops of the extract on your fingertips. Massage the extract into onto your face. After a minute rinse your face with water. When you are doing this, you might notice a slight tingling on your face. This is normal and a good sign that the extract is working.

To treat diarrhea, mix two drops of grapefruit seed extract in an eight ounce glass of water. Drinking this may even prevent diarrhea.

If you have a sore throat, add three drops of grapefruit seed extract with a glass of water and gargle with it. Since grapefruit seed extract contains bacteria fighting properties, gargling can kill a majority of strep bacteria.

There are many more uses of grapefruit seed extract.  Like the fruit and the juice, this extract treats and prevents a wide variety of illnesses and ailments.

Grapefruit seed extract is an excellent water purifier.  This is ideal if you are ever in a situation where the water is undrinkable.  For example, you may only have tap water available and did not get a chance to go to the store to get spring water or you don’t have any more filter for you Brita or you may be in an area, such as a campgroung, where the only water available is from a local stream.  Fill up a gallon on water and add up to twenty-five drops of GSE to the bottle.  After putting the cap on the bottle, shake it vigously for a minute.  Allow it to sit for three to five minutes before drinking.  Please note that the GSE may give a tart taste to the water.

If you use a humidifer, add four drops of GSE per gallon of water.  GSE is effective in killing and preventing mold.

Grapefruit seed extract is very acidic.  Therefore, before you use it to treat any health ailments or conditions, it is recommended to dilute it.  Use water or juice to treat and internal conditions and a carrier oil, such as lotion to treat external conditions.

While there are very few adverse reactions to grapefruit, it is best to talk to your doctor to see if grapefruit will interact with any medications or supplements that you are already taking.

    When I was a kid we had grapefruit with sugar on top. But I fell in love with the juice when I was in college. I had a bad cold one time and went to the student union to get some orange juice. They didn ot have any so I got grapefruit juice. It chased that cold away and I tend to drink that over orange juice. My daughter prefers O.J though

    Informative article. I used to eat grapefruits at dinner almost every night, we even had a tree growing in our back yard. However, since going on blood pressure medications, some restrict people from consuming grapefruit. It’s always best to check with your pharmacist about grapefruit and certain medications.
