What is one of the main ingredients in a salad? The answer is lettuce. While it gives a nice crunch to whatever you are eating it is very healthy to eat.

All type of lettuce is healthy for you. However, some are healthier than others. Lettuce comes in a variety of colors. However, did you know that the darker lettuce is, the healthier it is for you? While you most likely use iceberg lettuce for you sandwiches, hamburgers and salads, it is a healthier choice to use the darker Romaine lettuce.

Low in calories, lettuce is known as a free food. If you are limiting your calories, you can eat lettuce throughout the day and not worry about cheating on your diet. Whenever you have a urge to snack, pick up some lettuce and much away. That is a healthier snack that a bag of potato chips.

Lettuce is an excellent source of protein. If you work out at a gym, you want to have protein in your diet. The protein is needed to build muscle mass and to maintain it. When you have larger muscles, the body burns more calories.

Lettuce is an excellent source of dietary fiber.  By eating lettuce you are promoting excellent intestinal health. If you suffer from constipation or want to prevent it, eating lettuce helps keep you regular. Lettuce also helps treats conditions of the digestive system such as acid indigestion and upset stomachs.

Lettuce boosts the immune system because it contains Vitamin C. If you have a cold or the flu, eating lettuce can help fight the symptoms. You can even prevent yourself from getting sick in the first place by including lettuce in your daily diet.

Lettuce is rich in Vitamin A. We need this for optimal health, good vision, strong bones, strong teeth and youthful looking skin. The Vitamin A found in lettuce can even protect our eyes from conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

Lettuce is a major source of Vitamin K. If you want to have and maintain healthy bones and teeth, eating this vegetable is the way to go. By including lettuce in your daily diet, you are lowering the risk of getting osteoporosis you age. Vitamin K is necessary if you want to have a healthy liver. This vitamin also plays a role in allowing the blood to clot normally.

Lettuce contains folate which plays a key role in making the cells in the body function properly.  When you do not have enough folate in your daily diet, the levels on homocysteine in your blood can increase.  Higher levels of homocysteine are one of the main causes of damage to the blood vessels and blood clots.  By including lettuce in your diet, you may decrease the chance of getting a heart attack by at least thirty present. Since lettuce also contains magnesium, eating this leaf vegetable helps reduce blood pressure. Do your heart good by including lettuce in your daily diet.

Our bodies need folic acid in order to have healthy cells.  Expecting women need this acid to help prevent birth defects in their children.  Since many leaf vegetables are high in folic acid, lettuce is the way to go.

Lettuce plays a major role in improving liver function by removing the toxins from your body. Lettuce is considered to be an excellent diuretic because of its high water content. Eating lettuce plays a major role in removing kidney stones and preventing crystals from forming in the urinary tract.

    I used to eat lettuce. During the market day in our place, I find time looking for lettuce. I eat it raw with some ketchup or mayonnaise. Now I know the nutrients and vitamins this vegetable could give to the human.
